Students in the Studio Art program have a variety of scholarship opportunities. The Alfred Levitt Memorial Scholarship in Art is awarded to rising juniors and seniors in the studio art program. The scholarship is based on academic records and overall merit. Individual scholarship awards may vary according to financial aid guidelines.
The Barbara Diane Hall Memorial Scholarship is awarded to students who have contributed to the field of fine arts. This scholarship is given to students in the studio art program who have been nominated by the studio art department. The scholarship is awarded based on the overall merit of the applicant and is funded by the Barbara Diane Hall Foundation. Students should submit a portfolio of their work to be considered for this scholarship. The scholarship will pay tuition, housing, and books.
The University of Mary Washington also offers the Alfred Levitt Memorial Scholarship in Art for rising sophomores and seniors in the studio art program. The scholarship is awarded to students who demonstrate competency in painting. Students who do not complete the portfolio will not be able to participate in ARTS 474.

University of Minnesota
Earlier this month, the University of Minnesota Studio Art program hosted Body and Machine: Exhibition of Kinetic and Interactive Art. This event was held at the Northrop King Building and featured artists who have been working with moving, sculptural, interactive and kinetic forms. The exhibition also featured students who chose to have their work exhibited. The program invited the artists to create a series of artworks.
The exhibition was part of an ongoing discussion on the role of art in society. The event included an art installation by Washburn High School students that was part of the Northern Spark Festival. The festival is a celebration of the arts and will feature more than 150 artists from around the country. The festival will be held from June 4 until June 5 at dawn.
The event is hosted by Minneapolis-based artist Jenny Schmid. She was inspired to create the festival after learning of the Children and Armed Conflict unit at Washburn. This unit, led by Katie Alleback, has 90 ninth graders from the Honors classes studying armed conflict, including reading Persepolis, the book by Marjane Satrapi. They also watched Ghetto Life 101, a documentary about the lives of people living in ghettos in New York City.
One of the artists featured in this exhibition is Swedish artist Larsen Husby. His solo show was held at Red Garage Gallery in Minneapolis in 2018 and his work has been exhibited at Tuck Under Projects in Minneapolis, Phipps Center for the Arts in Hudson, WI, and Silverwood Park Gallery in Minneapolis. In addition to his work, Husby was the subject of a TPT television segment about MN originals in 2015. He will also create an outdoor installation, Touching Not Touching, in 2020.
Other students who have participated in the Northern Spark festival are Arella Vargas, a Spanish language interpreter for the Minneapolis Public Schools; Noah Heil, an instructor at ClayHouse, Brooklyn; Rebecca Grossi ’20, a Graphic Designer at BambooMN; Noah Exum, a National Design Team intern at RSP Architects; Becca Gallandt, a 2022 postgraduate apprentice in Printmaking; and Malini Basu, a Merit Award recipient in Studio Art. In addition to being a part of the program, Vargas was selected to participate in the Mellon Curricular Pathways grant, which enabled her to organize an art give-away.
The University of Minnesota Studio Art program also hosted its 46th annual iron pour. A collaborative event, the event featured artists and students from various departments working together to pour an iron sculpture in the center of the studio. This event has been a staple of the program since the program’s founding. Throughout the years, the event has invited many artists to participate. In addition to Husby’s work, other artists who have participated include the American-Iranian experimental artist Ali Momeni and the Swedish artist Harlan Marshall Quinn.
