Los Angeles has some of the best underground art spaces in the country. The Underground Art Museum is just one of them. This hidden gem of a museum is a popular destination for art lovers, both local and from out of town. There is something for everyone, whether you’re into contemporary, folk, or abstract art.
Urban Renewal Agency
The Urban Renewal Agency of Rock Springs, Wyoming, has launched an underground art gallery in an underpass on the city’s Main Street. The purpose of the gallery is to revitalize the neighborhood and encourage community involvement. The agency invited artists of all ages to create murals. Each piece must be the artist’s original work, and all mediums are welcome. The gallery was made possible by donations from local businesses including Home Depot and Bloedorn Lumber.
The agency’s goals include stimulating construction of transit-supportive housing and multiple-unit residential projects in urban areas, preserving historic buildings and attracting commercial development. The agency is also charged with addressing issues such as homelessness, property security, and building safety. It also considers the impact of natural disasters, such as wildfires and pandemics.
Rock Springs Main Street
The Rock Springs Urban Renewal Agency and the Rock Springs Main Street business district are seeking artists to create new murals for the Art Underground Gallery. This new art gallery will be located in the pedestrian underpass between North Front and South Main Streets. The gallery is designed to bring the community together and provide a venue for local artists. Artists of all ages and from various backgrounds are encouraged to participate.
Helmut John Anderson was recently awarded the People’s Choice Award for his piece at the Art Underground Gallery. Helmut was born in Germany, immigrated to the U.S. in 1956, and has lived in Rock Springs since 2006. Helmut is a retired psychotherapist and retired from Southwest Counseling in 2006. He previously worked as a social worker for the State of Wyoming and for 16 years at the Southwest Wyoming Rehabilitation Center.
Located in a pedestrian underpass, the Art Underground Gallery allows access to both sides of the railroad tracks. The gallery has rotating exhibits of public art and performances. The Rock Springs Pumpkin Patch opens on Oct. 10 and runs through October 24. The public is welcome and can visit between noon and 6 p.m., Monday through Saturday. Admission is free. While there, it is recommended to pick up a pumpkin as they are great photo opportunities. Rock Springs Main Street/URA has commissioned local artist Kaye Tyler to create a photo board at the event.
The art Underground Gallery is an innovative public gallery located near the yellow caboose and the rock springs coal archway. Nearby, the Sweetwater Events Complex is an expansive 320-acre facility. It is home to various events, including the Up in Arms Gun Show and the Red Desert Roundup Rodeo.
MTA Arts & Design
MTA Arts & Design Underground Art is a dynamic art collection that spans the city. Founded in 1985, the collection now encompasses more than 250 projects, creating an underground museum of contemporary art. The collection includes a variety of artistic mediums, from sculpture to multimedia installations.
This book is a comprehensive guide to works commissioned by the MTA Arts & Design. It provides more than 300 color illustrations and informative descriptions of each piece. The book is authored by Sandra Bloodworth, director of MTA Arts & Design at the Metropolitan Transportation Authority. She received the Fund for the City of New York Sloan Public Service Award in 2005.
MTA Arts & Design supports performing arts and innovative installations within New York subway stations. They feature artists of all levels of experience and renown. Some of the featured artists include Romare Bearden, Elizabeth Murray, Xenobia Bailey, Vic Munoz, and Chuck Close. The event will include a panel discussion with these artists.
